Cooking Up Justice
Here's a clever idea from our colleagues in Philadelphia. They created a cookbook entitled "Cooking Up Justice" with sponsored recipes from local law firms and other businesses, and then held an "Iron Chef" - like competition among the contributors. Here's how Hal Cohen, our publisher in Philly, described the event:
"We had a fantastic event last night - a cook-off competition with the chefs from the cookbook. It was held at Del Frisco's steakhouse on 100% trade. There were close to 200 people there, all customers or prospective customers, and the feedback was incredible. Everyone had a great time eating, drinking and networking, and our MC Mike Jerrick from Good Day Philadelphia made the chef competition fun and entertaining. There were 3 winners, and each received a donated prize. The winning prize was a luxury box at an upcoming Flyers or Sixers game donated by Comcast...It was just a great overall night and despite the fact that it wasn't a direct revenue generator (it was part of what you paid for by being in the book), it created a tremendous amount of goodwill. Based on a number of conversations I had through the night and the "thank you" e-mails we're receiving today it will definitely lead to some direct business going forward."
A portion of the proceeds went to the support Center for Child Advocates in Philadelphia, which I understand is a great cause.
You can see the video and slide show of the event here:
They also promoted the event on the Legal Intelligencer's Facebook page, found here:
All in all, a great concept that could easily be copied in other regions interested in making a little money, building community, and donating to a local cause.
