How to Save the News


For those interested in the future of the news business, there's a terrific piece in the current issue of The Atlantic by James Fallows called "How to Save the News".  He focuses on Google and the ways in which it sees itself "saving" the news industry.  It is perhaps the most optimistic piece of journalism I've seen in awhile on the topic.  And contrary to the mythology that Google is killing off the traditional news business, Fallows argues that Google may be its savior.

I always found the notion that Google was helping to kill the news industry to be nonsensical. Newspaper circulation has been declining steadily for years. The web and the ability to gather and publish information instantly just sent it into hyperdrive, and an industry that congratulates itself on antiquated tradition was left floundering. I find it sad that they keep looking for others to "save" them--the iPad, Google, public financing--instead of being able to solve the problem themselves.
